Biography / CV of Rupert Merton

Rupert began his artistic journey making ceramics, first at school, then as an apprentice at Tingewick Pottery near Buckingham before studying for an MA in Art History at Cambridge. After university he set up a music recording and publishing business and spent the next 15 years working with musicians such as Thompson Twins, Television and Underworld. Finding clay more malleable, he returned to ceramics and an art school degree course in ceramic design at South Thames college.

To the dismay of his tutors he began to sculpt portrait heads and made stop frame animated films of the modelling process, adding a new semi-biographical dimension to traditional portraiture. Bizarrely this led to a commission to make documentaries about animal sculptor Mark Coreth at work in Africa and the Himalayas for the Discovery Channel.

He takes his inspiration from organic forms and tends to pick subjects that he finds intensely tactile. His latest private commission was for two life-sized bull hippos fighting in a lake and these can also be seen at the Pride of the Valley Sculpture Park in Surrey.

He is currently working on forms which have evolved from his fascination with the sub-tropical silk floss tree

Rupert lives and works in Fulham. He has shown works at the Sladmore Gallery, the Lennox Gallery and the Piers Feetham Gallery and will have his first solo exhibition at the Sladmore in 2009.

Artist Statement of Rupert Merton

I now work mainly in stoneware and porcelain, which is fired in an electric kiln. I make some domestic ware and larger, more sculptural pieces. My most recent works are installations that play with ideas of repetition and harmony. They are made significant through words or images which are not abstract or abstruse. The meaning is overt like the lyric to a song.

"All my life as an artist I have asked myself: What pushes me continually to make sculpture? I have found the answer. art is an action against death. It is a denial of death. "
